Your bridal hair timeline
9 to 12 months out: book your consultation
Hamptons wedding weekends in June, July, August and September fill early. As soon as you have your date and venue, book a bridal consultation and hold the date. Bring your date, venue, ceremony time, dress photos, veil or accessory plans, and a rough count of who in your party needs hair.
6 months out: color and hair health
Start any big color change now so you have time to adjust tone. Begin a hair-health routine: regular trims, weekly masks, heat protection. If you want extra length or volume, ask about extensions early.
2 to 3 months out: your trial
Test the style with your veil or accessories and a top close to your dress neckline. Wear the style for a few hours afterward to see how it holds, and take photos from every angle in natural light.
4 to 6 weeks out: final cut
A final shape-up that has time to soften before the day. No big length changes.
1 to 2 weeks out: final color and gloss
So your tone has settled and your hair has maximum shine for photos.
Wedding week
No new products or treatments. Confirm the schedule, gather your accessories, and wash your hair when your stylist tells you to. Many styles hold better on hair washed the day before.
Styles that work in the Hamptons
Beach and waterfront ceremonies
Ocean wind and humidity are the biggest challenges. Updos, low chignons and half-up styles hold best. Anchor the veil firmly, and ask for a humidity-resistant finish.
Garden and tented receptions
Soft, romantic styles suit gardens and tents. Choose a style that still looks lovely as it softens over the evening.
Vineyard and barn celebrations
Relaxed, textured styles such as soft braids, loose waves or an undone updo suit rustic settings, but should still be secured for dancing.
Black-tie and formal evenings
Polished chignons, sculpted waves and sleek updos suit formal venues and long nights.
Matching your hair to your dress
- Strapless and sweetheart: loose waves, half-up styles or a romantic low bun
- High necklines and halters: an updo or sleek low bun to keep the neckline clean
- Open or low backs: an updo or a side-swept style so the back stays visible
- Off-the-shoulder: a soft, slightly undone updo or waves pulled to one side
- Minimal and modern: a sleek low bun or glossy straight hair
Weather and the season
June. Changeable weather and cool evenings. Plan a style that can be secured quickly if the wind picks up.
July and August. Heat and humidity near the water. Updos and half-up styles hold best; ask about humidity-resistant finishing.
September and October. A favorite season for East End weddings, with cooler, kinder weather for most styles. Wind on the water can still be a factor.
In-salon or on-site?
In-salon gives you professional lighting and space, and is ideal for smaller parties or trials.
On-site at your home, rental or venue means you never have to leave, which is often easier for a large wedding party. Warren Tricomi offers at-home and on-site bridal services. Discuss which suits your day at your consultation.
Keeping the wedding morning on schedule
- Allow enough time per person, with extra time for the bride
- Schedule the bride last or near last, with a buffer before getting dressed
- Build in time for veil placement and photos
- Have everyone arrive with hair prepared as the stylist asks
- Wear button-front shirts so nothing goes over freshly done hair
- Keep food and water nearby
What to bring to your bridal trial
- Your veil, headpiece, clips or hair jewelry, or close substitutes
- A top with a neckline similar to your dress, or at least a similar color
- Photos of styles you love, and any you know you do not want
- Photos of your dress, especially the back and neckline
- Your earrings, if you know which you will wear
- Your makeup artist's schedule, if you are trialing hair and makeup the same day
Hair health in the months before your wedding
- Trim regularly to keep ends healthy, without big length changes
- Use a weekly conditioning mask
- Turn down the heat on styling tools and always use heat protection
- Protect from sun and chlorine, especially if your wedding is in summer and you are spending weekends at the beach
- Rinse after swimming and use a chelating shampoo weekly to avoid brassy or green tones before your photos
- Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase
- Do not try new treatments close to the date
Short hair and bobs
Brides with short hair or a bob have plenty of options: polished, glossy styling, soft texture, a sleek side part, or a statement clip or headband. A small updo is possible with many bobs, and extensions can add length or volume for the day. Discuss what is realistic at your consultation.
Common bridal hair mistakes
- Making a big color change in the final month
- Getting a dramatic cut close to the wedding
- Skipping the trial
- Washing your hair the morning of when your stylist asked you not to
- Underestimating how long hair takes for a large party
- Choosing a loose, soft style for a windy beach ceremony
- Trying new products in wedding week
Questions to ask your bridal stylist
- Which styles suit my hair texture, my dress and my venue?
- How will the style hold up in the weather on my date?
- How should I prepare my hair for the trial and the wedding day?
- When should I wash my hair before the wedding?
- How long will hair take on the day, per person and for the whole party?
- In-salon or on-site: which do you recommend for my wedding?
- What should be in my touch-up kit?
- When should I book my final color, gloss and cut?
Hair for wedding guests by dress code
Black tie. A polished updo, sleek chignon or sculpted waves.
Formal or cocktail. A smooth blowout, soft Hollywood waves or an elegant half-up style.
Beach or garden. Soft waves, a loose braid or a relaxed low bun, secured against wind.
Daytime and brunch. A fresh blowout or easy textured waves.
Book guest blowouts as early as possible. Wedding weekends in the village fill quickly.
Hair for the mothers of the bride and groom
Mothers often want a look that is elegant, photographs beautifully and lasts all day without feeling stiff. Popular choices include a soft updo, a polished blowout with volume, or refined waves. If you color your hair, book a gloss or color refresh one to two weeks before the wedding.
Your touch-up kit
Give your maid of honor a small kit: bobby pins in your hair color, travel hairspray, a compact mirror, a small comb, blotting papers and spare veil pins.
Planning a wedding weekend in the Hamptons
Many Hamptons weddings are full weekends. Plan hair for each event:
- Rehearsal dinner: a blowout the day before. Ask your stylist whether it works with your wedding-day style.
- Wedding day: your main appointment, with touch-ups before the ceremony and reception.
- Brunch: something easy. Ask how to take down an updo gently without breakage.
Guests: book your blowouts as early as possible. Wedding weekends in the village fill quickly, and parking takes longer on summer weekends.
Event styling beyond weddings
The East End social season runs from Memorial Day well into the fall: benefits, galas, garden parties, dinners and milestone celebrations. For any event:
- Tell your stylist the occasion, dress code and setting, including whether you will be outdoors or near the water
- Book close to the event for the freshest finish
- Choose a secure style for wind, such as an updo or half-up style
- Ask for a humidity-resistant finish in July and August
- Plan for the drive. Keep the car windows up on the way
Color before the big day
If you color your hair, plan it around the wedding:
- Six months out: start any big change
- One to two weeks out: final color or root touch-up, then a gloss for shine
- Summer weddings: protect your color from sun and chlorine in the weeks before, and use a chelating shampoo weekly if you swim, so your color photographs clean, not brassy
